NotchLive
Live captions in the notch, no cloud
Subscription-free alternative to Otter.ai, Descript.
NotchLive transcribes whatever your Mac is playing and puts the text in the MacBook notch — a strip that is black anyway and covers no window. Audio arrives through ScreenCaptureKit from the system or the microphone rather than through an integration, so the app neither knows nor cares whether the source is Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, a podcast or a recorded lecture. That removes the part of meeting transcription that usually causes the friction: no bot joins the call, and nobody has to be host to enable a setting first. Macs without a notch get the caption bar at the top centre of the screen.
Speech recognition runs on the machine: Whisper via CoreML, 90+ languages, plus translation into 20 languages through Apple Translation on macOS 15 and later. The app goes online only to fetch models and language packs on first run; after that the audio stays local, there is no account, and no server holds a copy of the transcript. For lectures, medical appointments or client calls that is the whole point — captions without sending what was said to a transcription service first.
Captions themselves are free and unmetered, along with every Whisper model, system and microphone capture, and the keyboard shortcuts — no minute allowance. Pro is a one-time $14.99 and adds live translation, saved transcripts, Voice Notes, export and Meeting Intelligence; it is sold through Polar, whose checkout reports the item explicitly as a one-time payment. Team Packs cover shared activations. Apple Silicon is recommended, Intel is supported.
Why no subscription? For a lot of people captions are not a bonus feature but the condition for following along at all — and they are still usually billed by the month and by the minute. NotchLive charges nothing for the core and, for the rest, once, less than two months of what the established tools cost.
